One More Time
words & music by John Kimsey (John Kimsey Tunes / ASCAP)
I’m gonna take this old rig
I’m gonna drive it off the road one more time
I’m gonna take these old wheels
I’m gonna drag’em through the mud one more time
Well I used to keep’em pretty but you have to get’em dirty
To really drive
And feel alive
I’m gonna take this old rig
I’m gonna drive it off the road one more time
And let’s take that old flag
And run it up the pole one more time
It’s torn and it’s tattered but that ain’t the thing that matters
When it flies
When it flies
You wanna take that old flag
And run it up the pole one more
Time to take
That guitar break
That one way up the neck
And find that one note
And worry it to death
One more time
I’m gonna take this old heart
I’m gonna let it fall in love one more time
It’s been broke and it’s been busted, I’m not sure it can be trusted
Here tonight
To get it right
But I’m gonna take this old heart
I’m gonna drive it off the road
I’m gonna drag it through the mud
I’m gonna run it up the pole, I’m gonna worry it to death
I’m gonna let it fall in love
One more time

She Says Yes To Everything
words & music by John Kimsey (John Kimsey Tunes / ASCAP)
She came here from back east her face shows the lines
Of orders to make peace with Doc and the combine
I still hear her whisper like wind in the trees
Remember yourself and forget about me
No no she is not the same
No no she is not to blame
She says yes yes yes yes yes
To everything
Well it’s a hard one to try and live outside the law
If the zombies don’t get you there’s always the thaw
And should you get stuck in that muddy country
Remember yourself and forget about me
No no she is not the same
No no she is not to blame
She says yes yes yes yes yes
To everything

Across the Borderline
words & music by Ry Cooder, James Dickinson & John Hiatt (Universal / BMI)
There's a place where I've been told
Every street is paved with gold
And it's just across the borderline
And when it's time to take your turn
There's one lesson that you must learn
You could lose more than you'll ever hope to find
‘Cause when you reach the broken promised land
Every dream slips through your hands
Then you'll know that it's too late to change your mind
Because you've paid the price to come so far
Just to wind up where you are
And you're still just across the borderline
Up and down the Rio Grande
A thousand footprints in the sand
Reveal a secret no one can define
The river flows on like a breath
In between our life and death
Tell me who's the next to cross the borderline
‘Cause when you reach the broken promised land
Every dream slips through your hands
Then you'll know that it's too late to change your mind
Because you've paid the price to come so far
Just to wind up where you are
And you're still just across the borderline
En la triste oscuridad
Hoy tenemos que cruzar
Este río que nos llama más allá
But hope remains when pride is gone
And it keeps you moving on
Moving you just across the borderline
‘Cause when you reach the broken promised land
Every dream slips through your hands
Then you'll know that it's too late to change your mind
Because you've paid the price to come so far
Just to wind up where you are
And you're still just across the borderline
And you're still just across the borderline

Wide Lawns and Narrow Minds
(words & music by John Kimsey / John Kimsey Tunes, ASCAP)
Wide lawns and narrow minds
Makes a man healthy wealthy and why ask why
When you got yours yes and I got mine
Here’s to wide lawns and narrow minds
We are bullish on ameriquest
We report you subside
Down below decks we hear things is abject
But up top the panoramic view’s a crime
Wide lawns and narrow minds
Makes a man healthy wealthy and wine wine wine
Spodeeodee drinking wine while the cut glass shines
Have another wide lawn and put a deuce on pepperdine dine dine
We reserve the right, we rule the waves
And we waive the rules when it’s pay the piper time
All it takes is brass and a well bred overclass
To ensure the proper credit’s paid in kind, in kind,
Credit’s paid in
Kindly beware that life isn’t fair
We each must bear the burden we’re assigned
Some sign here and some pay dear
And a lucky few slip through without a fine
Wide lawns and narrow minds
Makes a man healthy wealthy and why ask why is
One man’s bonus another man’s subprime
Chalk it up to wide lawns and narrow minds
Well they say that great ship when it set sail
Yeah they said it was too damn big to fail
Well you might be underwater, you might be starting to flail
Take a look at the fine print, it says don’t ex hale hale hale all hail to
Wide lawns and narrow minds
Makes a man healthy wealthy and why why why why why why

Elvis on Velvet
words & music by John Kimsey (John Kimsey Tunes / ASCAP)
Last evening you and me we had our usual fight
And I went out driving and drinking and cussing the night
And somewhere ‘bout dawn I was out on the interstate strip
When I pulled in a truck stop, thinking I’d pick up some little making-up gift
And as I looked around at the selection of post cards and coasters and corncob pipes
My eyes came to rest on something familiar I’d never quite seen in that light
It was a souvenir
Meant to bring a tear:
Elvis on velvet
Wasn’t anything great, just a cheaply made dayglo affair
And it depicted the King in his later and lonelier years
But it set me to thinking ‘bout all that I’d done in my life
And two kids who met back in ’57 who went on to be man and wife
And they might have been fools to rush in but they were young and they had no doubts
They just liked to dance all night long to “Baby, Let’s Play House”
And their love was true
But now it’s just misty blue
Like Elvis on velvet
Now the King is no longer with us, but his spirit lives on
In the hearts of his fans, in his pictures and of course in his songs
And even in truck stops I guess, ‘cause as I stared at that thing
I thought for a moment I saw his lip quiver like when he was fixing to sing
And then somebody turned a radio on and it was playing “That’s All Right”
And I thought to myself hell, the King ain’t gone and there’s still good rockin’ tonight
And I’ve been a fool
But I’m gonna be on you
Like Elvis on velvet
‘Cause our love ain’t through
Baby I go with you
Like Elvis on velvet

Hallelujah Anyhow
(words & music by John Kimsey / John Kimsey Tunes, ASCAP)
If I owned this town and hell
I would rent out the town and I would live in hell
And if you gave me I said well oh well
‘Bout a dollar forty seven for my soul I’d sell
Down at the Crossroads Cocktail Lounge
I overheard the hellhound saying to the sacred cow
Takes one to know one anyway here’s to ya
Hallelujah anyhow
Spin out the east, spin out to the west
Spin out at the wheel -- who dealt this mess?
Pump fake to the left then swing to the right
Let your head hang down in unforgiving light
Down at the Brass Rail Monkey Bar
I swear I saw the hellhound dancing with the sacred cow
Then they lit out for parts unknown or was it Pascagoula
Hallelujah any
How many times
Yes and how many roads
And how many angels
Can dance on the edge of a pinhead
And still leave room for one of those
Reality shows
Well it’s one for moneyed
And it’s none for the poor
And it’s Freddy get ready
To up and go down slow
And it’s two if by land
And three if by bus
For we have met the enemy and he is us
But if I see your sign may I know your face
And may we figure out how best to use this space
That’s between these notes and between these eyes
And the minutes and the hours and the days of our lives
Down at that kangaroo courthouse
I heard ’em call the hellhound
Witness for the sacred cow
One never ever really knows now do one
Hallelujah anyhow

Amarantha
words & music by John Kimsey (John Kimsey Tunes / ASCAP)
Amarantha knows this place
Hears the music, feels the trace
Of a presence that’s long gone
All along the all along
Amarantha, one good eye’s
All you need to catch the sky
Counting thunder through the storm
Even when all is foresworn
Time rolls on its trestle
Fate collects its fees
Long ago we wrestled
Shaking in the leaves
Keep your promise, keep your nerve
Keep well outside of Spartanburg
Tie a ribbon round a limb
Pick a pocket, pick a hymn
Amarantha you’ve suffered fools
Gladly giving kind for cruel
Headlong into chilly wind
All along the might have been
Out among the people
Their faces become phones
Feeling like a letter
In a palindrome
Whatever records heaven keeps
Let’em show not all were put to sleep
By a signal from a screen
All along the in between

Words for Snow
words & music by John Kimsey (John Kimsey Tunes / ASCAP)
Who are we, where do we come from
Where is it that we go
Said the Khan, a round for everyone
And two for young Mr. Polo
Compass four
Cross seven ocean shores
Twice thirteen nights and more
Words for snow
Day-o
Who are we, where do we come from
What is it that brings us all here
Silent song, a dream or a dusty gong
Or just your own face in the mirror
Compass four
Cross seven ocean shores
Twice thirteen nights and more
Words for snow
Day-o
[chanted, not sung; these are words of W. B. Yeats]:
Locke sank into a swoon
The garden died
God took the spinning jenny
Out of his side
Where got I that truth?
Out of a medium’s mouth
Out of nothing it came
Out of the forest loam
Out of dark night where lay
The crowns of Nineveh
Who are we, where do we come from
Where is it that we go
Said the Khan, a round for everyone
And two for young Mr. Polo
Compass four
Cross seven ocean shores
Twice thirteen nights and more
Words for snow
Day-o
Day-o day-o day-o

Hurdy Gurdy Man
words & music by Donovan Leitch (Peer International)
Thrown like a star in my vast sleep
I opened my eyes to take a peek
To find that I was by the sea
Gazing with tranquility
‘Tis then when the hurdy gurdy man came singing songs of love
Then when the hurdy gurdy man came singing songs
Of love
Histories of ages past
Unenlightened shadows cast
Down through all eternity
The crying of humanity
‘Tis then when the hurdy gurdy man comes singing songs of love
Then when the hurdy gurdy man comes singing songs
Of love
Hurdy gurdy hurdy gurdy hurdy gurdy gurdy he sang
Up comes a roly poly man and he’s singing songs of love
Roly poly roly poly roly poly poly roly pole
Ahh

Please Send Me Someone To Love
(words & music by Percy Mayfield / Sony ATV)
Heaven please send to all mankind
Understanding and peace of mind
And if it's not asking too much
Please send me someone to love
Show the world how to get along
Peace will enter when hate is gone
And if it's not asking too much
Please send me someone to love
I lay awake at night knowing that the world is sleeping
And my answer is always the same
That unless man puts an end to all of his damnable sin
Hate will put the world to the flame, what a shame
Just because I'm in misery
I'm don’t want no sympathy
But if it's not asking too much
Please send me someone to love

Walken
(words & music by John Kimsey / John Kimsey Tunes, ASCAP)
He’s got his own way of walkin’
He’s got his own way of talkin’
He strikes all punctuation from the page
Whenever he prepares a script for screen or stage
Walken, Mr. Christopher Walken
With that funny way of talkin’
Walk on
Keep walkin’ that Walken talk ‘til the crowds go home
He gets typed as a psycho
But he’s the homebody type, oh yes
He’d like to host his own cooking show
While his wife does the casting for the Sopranos
Walken, Mr. Christopher Walken
Oh you wouldn’t want to stalk him
Oh no
He’ll open up a can of tap dance on your nose
He’s got vertical hair
He’s a hoofer from way back
He’ll sneak a plié in there
Before the camera cuts and they fade to black
In Whitley Streiber’s Communion
He played the one that was human
Even Balls of Fury felt the glow
That emanates from his Oscar portfolio
Walken, Mr. Christopher Walken
He’s way off of Stephen Hawking’s
Radar
‘Cause Christopher Walken is a frickin’ star
Walken, Mr. Christopher Walken
With that funny way of talkin’
Walk tall
Keep walkin’ that Walken talk ‘til the curtain falls

John Kimsey Oak Park, Illinois
